The point here is not to bash America. The point is this: People are only deceiving themselves when they believe that this country was a perfect utopia of freedom and justice and that things are only going terribly wrong now. The history of this country is one of small groups of people fighting for freedom and justice amid the forces and factors of powerful interests and the social status quo. And that is a history of which one should be proud.
Each small gain for a minority is a gain for the aggregate freedom of us all.
This country was not better off when there were slaves; although it was certainly better economically for the slave owners.
This country was not better off when there was segregation; although it was better off to those who held social and political power.
This country was not better off when women could not vote; although it was better off for the patriarchs of the country’s social institutions.
This country was not better off when each and every day brought forth the possibility of nuclear annihilation.
This country was not better off when citizens could be arrested and tried without the right to a lawyer.
This country was not better off when police could beat confessions out of suspects.
Until there are equal rights and opportunities available for all this country has not achieved a new birth of freedom.
Freedom, without options and opportunities, isn’t really freedom, it is just existence. Freedom of choice means there must be choices available. There is still work to be done. Nostalgia for a non-existent past is a recipe for social disaster.
A country’s greatness, its character, and its very nature derives from the bad things, as well as the good things, it has done in the past. To disregard this is to deny history.
When people disregard the facts and lessons of history and replace them with a fairy-tale history, what results is a loss of all perspective, callow judgments, and a ready acceptance of the panacea of the policies from the past imaginary “good old days.” The article IS THIS OUR MANIFEST DESTINY? is proof of that.
