Retired Lawyer LD Sledge On Hiring the Right Person

LD Sledge Radio Interview on Latest Book - No Fail Hiring
The book's filled with gems" - Radio host London Garcia - by C. Perry
Mr. Sledge does a great job of getting the point across that the hiring process consists of navigating a series of minefields. His book takes employers through a step-by-step process of successful hiring. The first minefield consists of the most common pitfall of hiring - hiring a guy just cause you hit it off well with him. There is a protocol to hiring which includes doing due diligence to check into his background. If you fail to check him or her out it can kill your business. Minefield number two is hiring without making it clear that he can be fired without cause. You say "You'll love it here in our family. We have a 30 day probationary period." That scraping sound? The mine's cable dragging along the hull. It implies an employment contract other than at-will hiring. The third minefield is navigating through the feds - Title VII - questions you can and can't ask. "Do your children object if you or your husband smoke or drink on Christmas morning?" (KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM! KABOOM!). The author stresses that although the statistics for bad hires is scary, No Fail Hiring provides a map through the minefields.
The new book is co-authored with Patrick Valtin, who has trained employers in hiring practices in thirty different countries.
[Mr. Sledge is the author of several books, including "Dawn's Revenge," "Command Influence," and "Nimrod's Peril. He serves as a senior Editor and Poetry Editor for the Clearwater Sun. He is a poet, writer, musician, courtroom lawyer for forty-three years and is now living in Florida where he is active in the arts and education. One of his poems recently won an award for its contribution to human rights."]

Morning Benediction

On the slate of morning I write my day
Inscribed with simple symbols that cast the spell.
I close my eyes and breathe the trees.
I suck the day into my bones, and integrate,
knowing it is all an extension of myself.
My senses stretch and feel the melody
played on the strings of morning
I hold still for a moment in eternity
as my dreams entwine
and flow through its timelessness
Deep pools of thought gather at my feet
and rise to give me drink.
I rise on the swelling tide
and reach to the horizon
on this nbew day
in the continuing search
for something so long lost
among the wastes
and feel into endlessness
for that which I know
Is somewhere there in plain view
Something I hid from myself
beyond time
and I know
when I grow
wise enough
it will show
and it will be me
no longer lost.
Until then
I know
I am the morning
in all its glory and promise
